ACP Journal Club EVMS resourceDescription: ACP Journal Club (ACPJC) is an evidence based surveillance and abstracting service published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It contains structured abstracts that summarize the most important methodologically sound articles pertaining to clinical practice.Search: Uses 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title) to find abstracts. Indexed articles provide links to the PubMed record and are available in full-text. The Basic Search function allows you to enter key terms and phrases that will be searched against the ACPJC collection. The Advance Search function provides a search template that allows the use of Boolean logic (AND/OR/NOT/NEAR) to combine search terms and search like terms. Click on the SEARCH button in the tool bar at the top of the page. The default is the Basic Search. Search results are displayed by the title of the article. Click on the title and the full-text will be displayed.Scope: Primary and secondary (reviews and guidelines) clinical studies that meet key methodological criteria are summarized and commented on by experts. Covers internal medicine and primary care.Use: Best used for questions that can be addressed using clinical research, strongest for therapy and prognosis, weaker for diagnosis and causation. (Foreground Questions)Validity: Articles are selected if they report evidence that could change what practitioners do. Explicit methods of selecting and summarizing articles are described in the introduction.Applicability: Each abstract summarizes details about patients, practitioners and practices; experts comment on clinical relevance.Currency: Publishing began in 1991. Six issues per year.More: EVMS associates can access ACP Journal Club through the Electronic Journals Page.

Subcategories for each disease are: Prevention, Screening, Diagnosis, Consultation for Diagnosis, Hospitalization, Non-drug Therapy, Drug Therapy, Patient Education, Consultation for Management, and Follow-up. Additional topics are addressed under Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Ethical and Legal Issues and Procedures.Use: Organized by health condition and disease, optimized for quick review of disease management. Most complete for prevention, diagnosis and therapy. (Background Questions)Validity: Content is subject to editorial, peer and user review, relies on sources (e.g., ACP Journal Club) for much of the filtering and appraisal of validity.Applicability: Quick access to lists of key points in disease management. Guidelines are given for application to patient care.Currency: Publishing began in 2002. Updates are ongoing and occur frequently.More: EVMS associates can access ACP PIER from STAT!Ref.

Bandolier Free resourceDescription: Each month PubMed and the Cochrane Library are searched for systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in the recent past. Those that look remotely interesting are read, and where they are both interesting and make sense, they appear in Bandolier, first in the paper version and, after a few months, on the Web site.Search: The entire site can be searched or topics can be browsed by clicking on the journal issues or topic sections.Scope: The impetus behind Bandolier was to find information about evidence of effectiveness (or lack of it), and put the results forward as simple bullet points of those things that worked and those that did not: a bandolier with bullets. Information comes from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized trials, and from high quality observational studies.Use: Content is limited, but it does have a good training section, with tutorials and essays on EBM principles.Validity: Content is subject to editorial and peer review.Currency: Publishing began in 1994. Updates are ongoing and occur frequently.More: http://www.jr2.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/index.html Access to the Web version of Bandolier is free.

Search results (number of hits) are listed according to specific database. To display search results, click on the number of hits located directly across from the database name. The search browser is not organized by clinical conditions. Articles are indexed according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Search by using the keyword search function for the best results. Most articles are provided in full-text.Scope: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (DSR) includes planned [Protocol] and completed [Review] reviews. The topics reflect the interests and priorities of Cochrane Collaboration members.Use: DSR is best for therapy or preventive care questions that can be addressed by strong quantitative study designs. (Foreground Questions) Does not cover Diagnosis at this time.Validity: Strictly controlled methods for identifying, reviewing, and performing the meta-analysis for evidence in each review. Extensive links to source evidence including studies excluded from the review.Applicability: Systematic reviews often include extensive sub-group analyses and policy considerations. Effect sizes usually expressed as absolute risk reduction and number needed to treat. Cumulative meta-analysis can be displayed for subgroups.Currency: Publishing began in 1993. Included reviews have to be about the effects of interventions. Potential reviews are identified by hand searching key medical journals, regular searching of bibliographic databases, and by scanning gray literature and selected Web sites.Use: The database covers a broad range of health and social care topics and can be used for answering questions about the effects of interventions, as well as for developing guidelines and policy making.Validity: In order to ensure quality, CRD has a policy of using two members of staff to independently select reviews for inclusion and to produce each structured abstract.Applicability: Each summary also provides a critical commentary on the quality of the review.Currency: DARE was created by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination in 1994.
